At 6:52 a.m., officers received a complaint of people hiding behind vehicles in a parking lot at 50 Greenwood Ave, Montclair police said. Both vehicles, a white Range Rover and a silver Kia Optima, left the parking lot as police arrived, officers said.

The Kia Optima was revealed to have been stolen from East Orange earlier that day, police said. Officers attempted to stop vehicles but they refused and a pursuit was initiated at Greenwood Avenue and Glenridge Avenue, police said.

At Lincoln Street and Maple Avenue, the driver of the Kia, a 16-year-old lost control and struck a curb, police said. The driver of the Kia exited and began to flee on foot, with officers eventually apprehending him at Irving Street, police said.

The 16-year-old continued to fight with police until he was handcuffed, police said. An officer sustained serious lacerations to his head and face, police said and he was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, police said.

The 16-year-old was charged with receiving stolen property, eluding and resisting arrest. He was transported to the juvenile detention center and released, police said. The Range Rover continued and was last seen south on Orange Road, police said.
